Formal Gardens Restoration Project

Shelburne Farms is working to raise funds for a four-phase, $3.35 million project to restore key elements of the Formal Gardens at Shelburne House.

  • PHASE 1: lakeshore stabilization, completed 2007, $200,000
  • PHASE 2: balustrade & lily pool, in progress as of December 2010, $1,180,000
  • PHASE 3: upper garden walls & stairs, $410,000
  • PHASE 4: pergola area, $660,000
  • Other Improvements, $400,000
  • Endowment, $500,000
  • TOTAL PROJECT: $3,350,000
  • Raised to date (as of 9/1/11): $2,255,000
  • BALANCE TO RAISE: $1,095,000

PHASE 2 began in 2010 and will:

  • Reconstruct wall overlooking the lily pool
  • Repair lily pool
  • Restore stairs and landings leading to lower terrace
  • Restore lake overlook balustrade in its original location
  • Repair brick wall at south end of lower terrace
  • Reconstruct failed walls at north end of garden
