Shelburne Farms offers several different Work and Learn Opportunities:

  • Apprenticeships provide post-college individuals with practical experience and skill development in the fields of environmental and agricultural education, interpretation, and organic gardening. Apprentices work on a full time, temporary basis (one or two seasons), receive a living expense reimbursement and are provided housing on site.

  • Internships are designed to allow an individual to receive college credit through their institution while working and learning at Shelburne Farms. An internship can be full- or part-time, lasting for a season or part of a season. Housing and reimbursement not provided.

  • The Stewards in Training program is a Work and Learn Opportunity for high school students ages 15-17. SITs work and learn alongside staff to gain skills and knowledge in education, agriculture, and the environment.

Organic Garden Apprenticeship
Shelburne Farms is seeking a motivated post college individual to join the Market Garden Team for a season of working alongside a master gardener to gain new skills and knowledge related to organic gardening. We operate a 6-acre market garden that delivers its produce to the restaurant at the Inn at Shelburne Farms as well as the local farmer’s market. We also have an education garden for school groups, camps and families to explore, harvest and learn about gardening. Responsibilities include planting, cultivating, weeding, harvesting, irrigation, operating a rototiller, IPM, transplanting, delivering, seeding, trellising, and meeting informally with the general public.
Qualifications: Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with little or no experience and eager to gain new skills and ideas. A college degree required. Desire to learn organic gardening techniques, some gardening experience preferred. Commit to working full time, 50-55 hours a week, including one weekend day from April-October.

Weekly hours vary with seasonal fluctuations. On-site housing and living expense reimbursement provided. This position has been filled for the 2008 growing season.

Education Apprenticeship
Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated post college individuals to teach and assist in the development of agricultural and natural resource education programs for children through adults. Strengthen your teaching techniques, administrative skills, and agricultural and natural history knowledge base while involved with a variety of programs. Apprentices get involved primarily with teaching our preschool and school field trip programs during the school year, and summer camps during the summer months. Qualifications: Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with just a little teaching experience, yet ready and eager to gain new skills and ideas. We are looking for someone that loves working with kids and ready to teach Monday through Friday. A degree in environmental studies, education, agriculture or a related field required.

This is a seasonal, full time position. (2 education apprenticeships are Sept-Nov, 1 April-Nov) On-site housing and living expense reimbursement provided.

Farmyard Apprenticeship
Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated post college individuals to learn new skills and knowledge in the agriculture field by working alongside staff in our Children’s Farmyard. These skills include animal care, lambing, sugaring, and general farmyard maintenance, such as carpentry skills. Responsibilities include: providing animal care and general farmyard maintenance; supporting the sugar maker through set-up and sugaring season (including weekend interpretation and sugaring assistance); supporting the shepherd through lambing prep and lambing season (including chores, interpretation programs, and night checks; Assisting in development of new animal production techniques and helping to teach agricultural programs for general public.
Qualifications:
Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with little or no experience and eager to gain new skills and ideas. Applicants should be enthusiastic about agriculture and animal care, willing to work outside, have an interest in agricultural education, have good communication skills, be flexible, and be able to work weekends. Commit to working full time, including one weekend day (Tues-Sat) from January-April.

Weekly hours vary with seasonal fluctuations. Housing on site and $180 per week living expense reimbursement provided.

Farmyard Interpretation Apprenticeship
Shelburne Farms is seeking a motivated post college individual to learn new skills and knowledge in the agriculture field by working alongside staff in our Children’s Farmyard. Learn more about animal husbandry and rotational grazing, and strengthen your knowledge of sustainable agriculture through hands on real work experiences. Job responsibilities include assisting with animal care, leading experiential agriculture activities, providing visitor information and general guest services, assisting in development of new animal production techniques, and doing general farmyard maintenance, such as carpentry work.
Qualifications: Apprenticeships are for those individuals out of college with little or no experience and eager to gain new skills and ideas. A degree in agricultural education, environmental studies, education, agriculture or a related field required. Applicants should be enthusiastic about agriculture and animal care, willing to work outside, have an interest in agricultural education, have good communication skills, be flexible, and be able to work weekends. Commit to working full time, including one weekend day (Tues-Sat) from April-October.

This is a seasonal, full time position from April to October. On-site housing and living expense reimbursement provided.
Position is filled for the 2008 season.



 


Education Internship
Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated college students to work and learn alongside education staff in assisting and teaching environmental and agricultural education programs. Interns may choose an internship during the school year or during the summer months. A typical day during the school year runs from 8am-2pm, preparing for and then observing, team-teaching or teaching an agricultural or environmental education field trip, and meeting with a mentor for feedback and discussion. Summer interns assist and help teach week-long (8:30am-4pm) camp programs for children ages 3-12. Summer interns commit to at least three weeks of camp.

Positions can be part-time (twice/week) or full-time and interns may receive college credit through their supporting institutions. Training is provided. Housing and reimbursement not provided. Now accepting resumes for Fall 2008.

Information Technology Internship: Intranet Website Project
Shelburne Farms is seeking motivated college students to work and learn alongside our information technology administrator in assisting in the development of an internal website. This project entails the research, design and implementation of an internal website (intranet) for use by Shelburne Farms and its employees. The general purpose of the site is to facilitate the dissemination of internal farm information to the farm's employees. The exact makeup of the resources and capabilities of the site would be determined in the needs assessment stage of the project.

Qualifications: The intern should have the skills to interview key stakeholders at the Farm, translate this information into a requirement document, and implement the project to the degree that time allows. Candidates must have knowledge or interest in developing these skills: strong verbal and written communication website development website content management software Microsoft Products, such as Internet Information Server, Windows Server 2003, Windows X{, Office 2003, SQL, etc.

Positions can be part-time or full-time and interns may receive college credit through their supporting institutions or just intern for the experience. Starting date and hours are flexible. Training provided. Stipend may be available. Housing not provided. Now accepting resumes.

  Stewards in Training

Established in 1997, the Stewards in Training (SIT) Program provides youth ages 15, 16, and 17 the opportunity to work, learn, and have fun assisting the Shelburne Farms Education staff with our Summer Education Programs. Stewards in Training receive experience in education, environmental studies, and agriculture. Commitment: Two or more full weeks during the summer. We offer two different programs to choose from:

  • Summer Camp SIT: Gain valuable teaching skills and learn more about the environment and agriculture by working alongside staff in our Summer Camp Program for children ages 3-12. Learn and teach new activities, participate in games and crafts, hike and swim with the campers, and explore the wonders of the farm and nature.
  • Children's Farmyard SIT: Gather new knowledge and skills in agriculture and gain the tools necessary for effectively leading educational activities for children and adults who visit the farmyard. Assist with daily animal care and chores, become involved in special work projects, and assist with ongoing hands-on activities for visitors.

Qualifications: Applicants should be reliable, self-motivated, energetic, enjoy working with people, and have an interest in agriculture and the environment.
