To support our mission, Shelburne Farms has developed a Work and Learn program to offer individuals the opportunity to learn about agricultural and environmental education and to learn more about cultivating active stewardship of the land while working alongside our staff.

Farm Based Education Residency

We are excited to begin accepting resumes and letters of interest for a brand new Work and Learn position! The Farm Based Education Residency is a great short-term opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in Environmental or Agricultural Education to gain early experience in the field. Residents will observe, team-teach, and teach independently in our school programs, summer camp programs, and in the pre-school Adventures program.

COMMITMENT: January-August or April-November
Residents will be expected to work full time and to teach 5 days a week, and will be compensated at minimum wage. Housing will be provided for a learning community immersion experience. They are encouraged to enhance their practical experience through active engagement in other departments on the farm while living on site. A small weekly expense will be deducted to help defer the cost of housing.

REQUIREMENTS: Farm Based Education Residency experiences are for post-college individuals with limited teaching experience. Candidates should enjoy working with children and be excited about learning.  A degree in Environmental Studies, Education, Agriculture or a related field is preferred.

Farm Based Education Internships

Education Internships are designed for students to earn college credit through their institutions while working and learning at Shelburne Farms. Interns learn to teach while assisting and teaching field trips or summer camp programs for students ages 3-13.

COMMITMENT: An internship can be full or part-time and may last for a full season or part of a season. We have opportunities for fall and spring semesters as well as programs throughout the summer.

REQUIREMENTS: Intern candidates must have a desire to work with children. Enthusiasm and flexibility are required!

Market Garden Internship

Market Garden Internships are designed for students to earn college credit through their institutions while working and learning at Shelburne Farms. Garden interns have the opportunity to learn gardening tasks, such as planting, cultivating, weeding, harvesting, irrigation, IPM, transplanting, delivering, seeding and trellising, and mulching. Interns in the Market Garden also have the opportunity to demonstrate land stewardship with adults and youth visitors.

COMMITMENT: An internship can be full or part-time and may last for a full season or part of a season. We have opportunities for late spring and early fall, and especially throughout the summer.

REQUIREMENTS: Intern candidates must have a desire to work hard and learn more about organic gardening techniques through hands on experience. Enthusiasm and flexibility are required!

Farmyard Stewards in Training

Interested in gaining valuable teaching skills and learning more about agriculture and animal care? Farmyard SITs are volunteers (ages 15-17), who assist the Farmyard staff with animal care and agricultural interpretation programs for the public. Examples of responsibilities: helping with and leading chores, taking animals out on halters to interact with families and camps, teaching the public how to spin yarn, answering questions about the farm and the animals, and acting as a mentor to the Farmyard Helpers.

COMMITMENT: 1 week (Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm), between June and August.

Adventures Stewards in Training

Interested in learning how to educate children ages 4–6? Adventures Camp SITs are volunteers (ages 15-17), who will learn new knowledge and skills relating to the environment and agriculture as they assist camp staff with leading activities. Responsibilities may include: teaching environmental and agricultural activities, leading songs, playing games, directing craft activities, and providing general supervision of campers.

COMMITMENT: 2 or 3 weeks (Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm), between June and August. (Times will vary depending on camps)
