Dear Friend of Shelburne Farms,
How do you prepare for a ten-day, 100-mile walk? At Shelburne Farms, of course! Last summer, a group of seven friends (including myself) from a book group in the Burlington area used the wonderful trail system at Shelburne Farms to build up our stamina and test our gear for a September hike in England—from Winchester to Eastbourne on the South Downs Way. If you saw people wandering around with back packs last summer, that might have been us. Occasionally we treated ourselves to breakfast at the Inn to break up the walks, even spreading our maps and itinerary out on the table to plan our route. The numerous, beautiful trails at Shelburne Farms (we can give you the mileage on every segment) are the perfect place for a long walk.

Speaking of Walking
— A New Trail!
We're working on the first stretch of a new, gravel pedestrian path that eventually will trace the main road down to the lake. Walkers— particularly folks with strollers— will find it a more beautiful and safer way to enjoy the property away from traffic. See map.
The work to date has been made possible by the Lintilhac Foundation and SCHIP, a local nonprofit that supports projects that improve the lives of the people in Shelburne, Charlotte and Hinesburg, through the sale of donated used clothing and homegoods. Additional funds need to be raised to complete the project.
Leahy Visits
Vermont Farm to School
The Farm organized a May 20 visit by Senator and Marcelle Leahy to Hunt Middle School in Burlington, VT to celebrate the successes of Vermont Farm to School and VT FEED* in fostering healthy school food systems.
After a cafeteria lunch with students, the Leahys explored the school's half-acre Healthy City Youth Farm with students and others, talking about lessons learned in the school garden and the value of serving healthy, local food in school.
Vermont Farm to School partners have been sharing the news on Vermont Farm to School in other places, too:
- Koi Boynton, VT Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets: In Touch radio
- Abbie Nelson, VT FEED Director & Linda Berlin of UVM's Center for Rural Studies on VPR: Vermont Edition.
- Jane Kolidinsky, UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Abbie Nelson, WCAX

Step Up to the Sty
OK. It's a pig shed, not a sty. (We couldn't resist the alliteration.) Either way, you'll now have an easier time visiting our sow "Petunia" and her 7 piglets, which were born on May 20. Thanks to farmyard staffer Ross Scatchard for tackling this construction project using wood harvested on the Farm.
ISC celebrates 20 years
"Shelburne Farms' partnership with ISC has allowed us to extend our outreach by participating in projects we simply wouldn't have the capacity to put together on our own."
— Alec Webb, Shelburne Farms President.
On Thursday at the Inn, the Institute for Sustainable Communities in Montpelier, VT, celebrated 20 years of forging partnerships that help communities around the globe create lasting solutions to sustainable development challenges. For all of those 20 years, Shelburne Farms has proudly been part of that effort, starting with their first education program in Hungary in 1991.
Jen & Megan visit China with ISC Project
In May, Jen Cirillo and Megan Camp were in Guangzhou, China for an international forum on Education for Sustainable Development hosted by ISC and its partners in China. They were sharing ideas and tools from our Sustainable Schools Project (not to mention years of environmental and agriculture education here at the Farm). ISC's Guangdong Environmental Partnership program is building community awareness and promoting behavior change, with a long-term goal to share successful strategies with other communities of China.

Update on Lake Levels
Like many in the Champlain Valley, we continue to struggle with the impact of high lake levels, most noticeably down at the Coach Barn, where our parking area is still largely under water. Thanks to those of you with events down there who've been flexible with parking arrangements. Recently, our friends at the Shelburne Museum reminded us that this isn't unprecedented. They shared these 1933 photos of Elm Swamp and the north seawall!
